It’s not fair to female rappers to only compare them to other female rappers, nor is it appropriate to act like there’s a ceiling on how many women can thrive at once in the industry. But given the dude-centric state of hip-hop, it’s hard to properly contextualize women on the mic without holding them up to their foremothers. When considering an artist like Tiffany Foxx, whose King Foxx owes a lot to a certain pink-haired rapper, it’s hard to not talk about Nicki Minaj.

Tiffany Foxx is signed to Lil Kim’s International Rock Star Records and is ostensibly the Queen B’s protege, but she is stylistically a Barbie. Kim broke out by fully embracing the way hip-hop insisted on objectifying her and defining herself by her sexuality. It was an important step forward for gender equality in rap, but not a path comfortable for every woman. While Nicki in no way downplays her sexuality, she has done so while establishing herself as one of the best rappers on earth, female or male. She experiments with her voice and cadence and puts indulgent five-minute rapfests on her platinum albums. If Kim showed the world a female could rap, Nicki showed the world a rappin-ass rapper could happen to be a female. A woman like Tiffany, proclaiming herself a King in the title of her tape, is presumably looking to do the same.
