Video: DJ Premier Speaks On Visiting Guru In The Hospital

April 26th, 2010 No comments

Damn, this is sad… Dj Premier spoke to rapradar about Guru’s condition when he saw him, and how there is no way that Guru could have been using twitter or written anything that Solar alleges he tweeted/wrote. According to Premo, Guru’s hair had grown into a huge affro, and his fingernails were “as long a ruler”. I cant believe that Solar is getting away with this shit. Noone going to sue his ass or make him accountable for his actions? There should have been no reason for Solar to neglect Guru so much, that shit is just wrong.

“I guess you don’t have the time to do that when you’re falsifying documents”

“The fucked up thing is that he died alone. You suppose to have mad people around you. There was nothing but silence and that respirator. [Cuz that lame ass nigga stopped everybody from coming.]”

I sure hope that Guru is brought to justice, and Solar gets his. I wouldn’t be mad at all if someone curb checked his punk ass for this, who knows what else he did behind closed doors.

Statik Selektah’s 2 Hour Guru Tribute on Sirius Shade45 [audio]

April 23rd, 2010 No comments

Last night Guru played a 2 hour set in tribute of Guru on his Show OFF radio show on Sirius Shade 45 channel. Make sure even though stat put together an awesome tribute here and it includes alot of the hits, that you should still support guru by buying his music. Remember that everything is available on itunes so not being able to cop the hard copy still supports those that guru left behind.

i know alot of DJs have been doing Guru tributes… which is dope, but this is 2 hours of music… from 1988, thru his history including Jazzmattazz Vol 1-3, to the end of the Gangstarr days. I covered what i feel was truly Gurus greatest work. this includes unreleased music, the b-sides, remixes, etc.

i also had Big Shug, Doo-Wop, Freddie Foxx, Consequence, and Chubby Chub call in and leave some Guru Memories….

he was an icon to me, as well as a friend, and i definitely wouldn’t be who i am without the presence of Gangstarr’s music in my life growing up. Shout out to the Gangstarr/Year Round crew for always being real people as well…. through the trials and tribulations. Rest In Peace G….

Guru’s nephew explains in depth the situation of Guru’s health, hospitalization and power of attorney being controled by Solar. This is a fucked up situation. Having a producer/record mogul having control of your life… They didnt even let the family know right away when Guru was hospitalized. Via DJ Premier. Guru’s dad cant even visit… cant even get an update on his health status without Solar’s okay… This is some fucked up shit… what a fuckin evil man.

Guru Hospitalized After Suffering Cardiac Arrest

March 1st, 2010 No comments

One of Hip Hop’s most influential emcees is presently in critical condition, several sources say. Guru, one half of pioneering ’80s, ’90s and ’00s Brooklyn-based Hip Hop group Gang Starr suffered a heart attack this weekend, according to the emcee and producer’s sister Tricia. says that the emcee, born Keith Elam is presently in a coma from complications of going into cardiac arrest. Guru is best known for penning hits such as “Words I Manifest,” “Discipline” and “Just To Get A Rep.” Between 1986 and 2004, Guru (an acronym Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) founded Gang Starr, a duo with DJ Premier that also includes Gang Starr Foundation affiliates Big Shug, Group Home, Jeru Da Damaja and Smiley Da Ghetto Child.

Born and raised in the Boston area, Guru relocated to Brooklyn in the late ’80s, where Gang Starr released its first singles with 45 King as producer. By 1988, the group evolved as a duo with Premier, and released their 1989 full-length debut No More Mr. Nice Guy on Wild Pitch Records. The duo would go on to release classic albums on Chrysalis/Virgin/EMI, such as 1994’s Hard To Earn and 1998’s Moment Of Truth. Gang Starr’s last album, 2003’s The Ownerz featured Jadakiss, Fat Joe and longtime affiliate Freddie Foxxx. The platinum group toured the world and released several greatest hits collections, most notably Full Clip: A Decade Of Gang Starr in 1999. The duo announced their split in 2004, reportedly due to creative and personal differences.

As a solo artist, Guru released four volumes of Jazzmatazz, Jazz-inspired recordings with legendary genre artists such as Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers. Guru has launched two labels in his career, Ill Kid Records and 7Grand, where he and production partner Solar worked alongside artists such as Talib Kweli, Damian Marley and Jean Grae.

HipHopDX extends prayerful thoughts to one of our staff’s most-respected emcees, the Elam family, Solar, DJ Premier and fans. We will keep you updated.

UPDATE: Miss Info confirms these reports with sources close to Guru. The emcee is presently in a New York hospital, awaiting surgery. DJ Eclipse spoke with DJ Premier, who also confirmed this. Premier was going to address the matter on Eclipse’s Sirius Hip Hop Nation show, but later changed his decision. has compiled Twitter reactions from notable artists including Jean Grae, ?uestlove, Royce Da 5’9″ and Jay Electronica.

DX will continue to report on this.
